Interphase chemistry of Si electrodes used as anodes in Li-ion batteries

چکیده
The effect of the Si electrode morphology (amorphous hydrogenated silicon thin films – a-Si:H as a model electrode and Si nanowires – SiNWs electrode) on the interphase chemistry was thoroughly investigated by the surface science techniques: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). XPS analysis shows a strong attenuation and positive shift of the Si 2p peaks after a complete charge/discharge performed in PCand EC:DMC-based electrolytes for both electrodes (a-Si:H and SiNW), confirming a formation of a passive film (called solid electrolyte interphase – SEI layer). As evidenced from the XPS analysis performed on the model electrode, the thicker SEI layer was formed after cycling in PC-based electrolyte as compared to EC:DMC electrolyte. XPS and ToF-SIMS investigations reveal the presence of organic carbonate species on the outer surface and inorganic salt decomposition species in the inner part of the SEI layer. Significant modification of the surface morphology for the both electrodes and a full surface coverage by the SEI layer was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

Challenges in Accommodating Volume Change of Si Anodes for Li-Ion Batteries
Si has been considered as a promising alternative anode for next-generation Li-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high theoretical energy density, relatively low working potential, and abundance in nature. However, Si anodes exhibit rapid capacity decay and an increase in the internal resistance, which are caused by the large volume changes upon Li insertion and extraction. This unfortunately ...
متن کاملFailure mechanisms of nano-silicon anodes upon cycling: an electrode porosity evolution model.
With a specific capacity of 3600 mA h g(-1), silicon is a promising anode active material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, because of the huge volume changes undergone by Si particles upon (de)alloying with lithium, Si electrodes suffer from rapid capacity fading. A deep understanding of the associated failure mechanisms is necessary to improve these electrochemical performances. To reach ...

Herein, SiO2 nanotubes have been fabricated via a facile two step hard-template growth method and evaluated as an anode for Li-ion batteries. SiO2 nanotubes exhibit a highly stable reversible capacity of 1266 mAhg(-1) after 100 cycles with negligible capacity fading. SiO2 NT anodes experience a capacity increase throughout the first 80 cycles through Si phase growth via SiO2 reduction. The holl...

In recent years, many studies have focused on the active materials of anodes to improve the performance of LIBs, while limited attention has been given to polymer binders, which act as inactive ingredients. However, polymer binders have amazing influence on the electrochemical performance of anodes. Herein, to investigate the binding performance between MCMB artificial graphite and the copper c...
